Project Description
Create a hypothetical beverage company along with its packaging assets.
Project Goal
Coming from a Hispanic background and my preference for drinking Vodka, I wanted to create a design that would break the Hispanic drinking stereotype and came up with the creation of SugarDoll Vodka. This vodka is a unique fusion between the delicate artwork of the Russian Doll and the traditional Mexican holiday called Dia de Los Muertos. The warm color palette symbolizes the warmth feeling after a shot of Vodka, and the sugar skull design behind the label is to create an interaction with the audience while unveiling this cultural festivity of life and death. Lastly, the brand name, Ruxico, builds a bridge between the two countries.
Design Process
For the sketches I wanted to use the floral patterns from both the Russian and Mexican art with a subtle hint of the skulls which symbolizes the holiday Dia de Los Muertos. The sketches on the right were my first initial sketches which was to create the form of the Russian Doll using the floral wrap and pattern, which would leave the negative space to create the Russian Doll. Later on I started looking at the Russian Doll more in depth the design and I decided to work with the body instead and find a way to somehow reveal the sugar skull version of the doll either behind the doll or in front.

For my type studies, I wanted to use a slab serif which was very much inspired by some Mexican Slab but having my secondary text be a much modern San Serif to represent the Russian typeface. Therefore having my main brand and product name to be in a Slab Serif and my supporting text such as what kind of beverage to be in a Sans Serif.

Using Procreate for the illustrations below, I used floral pattern from both Russian and Mexican cultures that is used on the back of the label. Illustration on the right is both the Russian Doll with the Sugar Skull Candy decorations that is easily recognized through the holiday Dia de Los Muertos.

Vectorized design with color varations.
Final Design
SugarDoll is a beautiful and a very uncommon fusion that is rare and unique and I am happy to be a part this project. The journey was amazing especially looking up the floral patterns from both groups and fusing them together to create a unique pattern, along with the warm and rich colors chosen from the feeling of drinking a shot of Vodka. Ruxico builds a bridge between both countries and unifies both cultures. Na Zdorvie, Salud and Cheers!
